Cosmic Crafts Foil Boards

Cosmic Crafts Foil boards are shaped by local Lennox Head surfer, foiler and shaper Travis Bristow. Over the last 5 years Travis has honed his board crafting skills at Local Motion surfboards, Ballina.

I've been spending a lot of time researching, developing and testing the foil boards. It's something I totally enjoy.

I'm stoked to currently be one of the only shapers in the area offering customers the most innovative, progressive custom foil board designs available. I've really tweaked my designs lately to get the most out of them in terms of performance. The fundamentals of the designs are that the foil board releases cleanly and quickly on liftoff and also when the board touches down during a turn. It must release cleanly and quickly to avoid wipeouts. Along with water displacement and aerodynamics, these ideas drive my designs forward. Hard edge's for super fast liftoff and release, some spiral V in the bottom for water displacement, and some concave for speed. These design elements also work well with airflow once up on the wing. The profile and rocker all need to be taken into consideration in and out of the water. I want the board to liftoff quickly and have minimal air drag once up. While carving at high speed and laying the board over hard on the wing, you want the rail out of the way. If the rail touches down you want quick release from the water surface. The design elements I have incorporated all assist these principal performance ideas and will continue on into the future.

The laminating process is being carried out in the area's longest running, industry leading surfboard factory right here on the Far North Coast. Renowned for building exquisite products for the likes of Local Motion, Gunther Rohn, Tim Patterson, Webster, JS, Rob Fenech Shapes, just to name a few, the board builders here have a rich knowledge of surfboard manufacturing that has proved invaluable to me.

I'm going 100% with Armstrong hydrofoils which I believe to be the best designed, strongest, most reliable and user friendly foils in the market. Personally I've really felt the difference between Armstrong and others. It's a direct positive feel (zero lag time) beneath your feet, with speed, maneuverability, control, pump and glide, all at the ready when you call on them. I really couldn't be happier with these hydrofoils. Armstrong hydrofoils will improve your riding regardless of your current ability.

BLANK: EPS Foam Core. 3d Shape cut, then hand finished. I'm hand shaping in the more radical design elements.

MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION: 198g Carbon Fibre. Hand laminated then vacuum bagged to ensure quality, strength and even resin flow control. You need to feel the contours of the board as you laminate it to ensure 198g carbon weave sits flat and the weave is very tight to the shape as the epoxy gels. USA resin research epoxy resins used.

10.75" Future boxes + High density reinforced box / mast area, double carbon laminated V cut.

Plan Shape: Balanced, fast, aerodynamic Area Pin tail. Not too narrow in the tail area so as to support your foot without going over the rails, but still narrow enough to be out of the way when in critical positions. I've factored in other design elements for wave face touch downs or connections that slow you down. In other words the design allows for these wave touch downs and will ride through them and release. The overall appearance is that of flow.

BOTTOM SHAPE: Double Concave Spiral V to slight concave into a flat tail section. Dual edges, concave bevel rail, tail scoop and deadrise. These design elements assist with water flow speed and dispersal, aerodynamics and wave face touch down and release, speed and the angle of attack of the wing. The dual edge release system has been designed for wave face touch down moments because they're unavoidable and this will greatly assist you. The rocker has been adjusted to best suit Armstrong foils with no need for shims. The hull design is quite brutal in appearance.

DECK: Aerodynamic, minimal drag, concave vee deck with tail kick. The concave vee lowers your centre of gravity and the kicker gives balance, power and responsiveness. The overall appearance is soft and smooth.

Black Cat 21

Had my 4'5" x 18" Black Cat foil board for a few months now & it's holding up really well, super happy with it and will definitely be ordering another when the time comes.

Perfect first board

Travis worked closely with me to help make the perfect first foil board. The only info I provided was my height and weight, as well as a colour. Trav designed a very user friendly setup.
I’m ready to progress to a smaller board now and can’t wait to order one of the new bottom shapes.
